“If I Could Start Again…” — Real Advice from ecomConnect E-Commerce Entrepreneurs
Starting an e-commerce business is exciting — until you realise how much you don’t know.
At some point, every entrepreneur hits the same questions:
Why isn’t this working? Should I have done this differently? Am I even on the right track?
So we asked our ecomConnect community members a simple question:
👉 If you could give ONE piece of advice to your past self before starting e-commerce, what would it be?
The answers were simple. Honest. And very telling.
Because while every journey is different, the lessons tend to repeat themselves.
“Start Here and Now”
One of the most common themes was hesitation.
As Tabitha Muthoni Maina put it:
👉 “Don't procrastinate - start Here and Now.”
And Fostina Mani added something many people need to hear:
👉 “Who lied to you that no one will buy?”
There’s a quiet fear at the beginning of every business — what if no one is interested?
So people wait. They plan more. They adjust again.
And without realising it, they delay the only thing that actually moves them forward: starting.
What many entrepreneurs discover later is this:
👉 You don’t figure it out before you start — you figure it out because you start.
Offering at least two or three trusted methods reduces friction and increases trust.
“Consistency is power to growth”
Starting is one thing. Staying is another.
As UWAR MARKO BUL shared:
👉 “Commitment and Consistency is power to growth.”
And Rebecca Omofuriota captured the same idea in fewer words:
👉 “Never stop learning…”
There’s a common expectation that results should come quickly — especially online.
But for most businesses, growth is not sudden. It’s gradual, sometimes invisible, and often frustrating.
The difference is rarely talent or luck.
It’s the ability to keep going when things feel slow.
“Don’t be shy to sell yourself”
For many entrepreneurs, the hardest part isn’t building the product.
It’s putting it out there.
As Mutiat Yusuff-Akinlabi said:
👉 “Don't be shy to sell yourself. Self + Product/service = 1”
Selling still feels uncomfortable for a lot of people.
There’s a fear of being judged, ignored, or coming across as too pushy.
But here’s the reality:
if people don’t clearly see what you offer — and why it matters — they won’t take action.
Visibility is not optional. It’s part of the business.
👉 Sometimes that simply means saying clearly: “This is what I sell, and this is how you can buy it.”
“It’s the first eye contact…”
Another lesson that came through strongly is how much first impressions matter.
As Olawunmi Dayo-Adepoju explained:
👉 “It's the first eye contact with the product and it goes a long way in decision, to buy or not to buy.”
And building on that, Lizzy Igbine shared:
👉 “Master your product that is your first step to marketing.”
In e-commerce, your product doesn’t get a second chance to explain itself.
What people see first — your image, your description, your presentation — often decides everything.
Before scaling, before ads, before growth strategies…
there’s a more basic question:
👉 Would you buy this — if you saw it for the first time, with no context?
“Mobile optimization… and compelling copy”
Some advice focused less on mindset — and more on execution.
As Razaq Ogunbanwo pointed out:
👉 “Mobile site optimization, and compelling copy are important too.”
It’s a simple point, but an important one.
Sometimes, businesses don’t struggle because of the product…
but because the experience is unclear, slow, or confusing.
A customer might be interested — but if something feels off, they leave.
Quietly. Without feedback.
So what do all these lessons really say?
None of these insights are complicated.
But that’s exactly the point.
Most challenges in e-commerce don’t come from advanced strategies.
They come from small things that are overlooked:
- Waiting too long to start
- Stopping too early
- Hesitating to sell
- Underestimating presentation
- Ignoring the buying experience
Simple things — repeated over time — create results.
You don’t have to figure it out alone
Every quote in this article came from someone who has already taken the step you might be hesitating to take.
And that’s the value of being part of a community — learning from people who are testing, failing, improving, and sharing along the way.
